THE BELLS OF BURGHCLERE
The Church of the Ascension has a ring of six bells, the tenor bell, which is the
heaviest, weighing 8 cwt.
The bells are rung for morning service every Sunday and
also for weddings and other special occasions.
Practice nights are on Wednesday between 7.30 and 9.00pm.
Burghclere bellringers
welcome visiting ringers, lapsed ringers and those interested in learning to ring.

NEWTOWN AND BURGHCLERE HANDBELL RINGERS
In December 1983 at Bramblings, a group of us assembled with the idea of starting a handbell ringers team using the handbells from Newtown Church . This we did - using numbers instead of music. Our first performance was at the Christmas Tea Party of the WI. In 1986 Margaret Evans became our conductor and we converted to using sheet music. After an appraisal of our handbells by Whitechapel Bell Foundry, it was decided to sell them and raise enough money to buy three and a half octaves of shiny new bells. We were very generously supported and in 1989 our new handbells came home. We now play every Monday afternoon, under the baton of Diana Whitehead, at Little
Culver, Newtown with a break in the summer. We play for a few societies and
occasionally enter a competition or a mass handbell ringing. At the moment we are a
team of ten and would welcome anyone interested as we have bells to spare!
